Applicants must:
- have current full-time faculty status at UMBC, and
- have a terminal degree in one’s discipline and expertise in science and technology studies scholarship and/or teaching
- have a commitment to the Human Context of Science and Technology Program
How to Apply
Upload the following materials in one document to the HCST Box folder.
- Up to a one-page statement of interest (single-spaced), including:
- Relevant research experience and potential contributions to HCST
- Confirmation that the department chair has been notified of HCST affiliate application
- Current CV
Review: Applications reviewed by the HCST governing committee
Term: 2 years (renewable based on consistent engagement)

Responsibilities:
- Teaching and/or serving on HCST Committees: Affiliate faculty will normally be expected to teach at least one HCST or elective course and/or to serve on the HCST Governing Committee during a two-year period.
- Advising: Affiliate faculty will be expected to be knowledgeable about and to disseminate information concerning the program and to advise students with respect to course selection within the program.
- Participation: Affiliate faculty will be expected to attend program-sponsored functions if possible.
- Vita and Course Syllabi: Affiliate faculty will be expected to submit a current curriculum vitae to the HCST Program. They will also be expected to submit all HCST course syllabi to the Program office.
Applications are reviewed by the HCST Governing Committee, which will vote to recommend each affiliate appointment to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The Dean will then issue an official letter of appointment to each faculty member. Once appointed, faculty may include their affiliation with the Human Context of Science and Technology Program in their professional work (i.e., CV, business cards).
